. >> even as the fiscal cliff negotiations drag on in washington, wall street seems to be basically unphased. the dow jones has slipped only about 200 points since the election. why isn't wall street more on edge itself? william cohen is the author of "money and power, hold goldman sachs came to rule the world." the labor department came out with the applications for unemployment aid saying it fell sharply for the last week and stocks basically opened flat this morning as we've seen. some of that has to do more with europe than it does with washington. but what is your reasoning for why wall street hasn't displayed more of an impact from this fiscal cliff nonsense? >> thomas, what wall street hates most of all is uncertainty and it's counterintuitive, there's actually plenty of certainty now. what's going to be certain is taxes are going up. either we go off the cliff or the curb and then taxes rise for everybody and then maybe they get repealed for the middle class and others or we reach a deal and taxes go up for the wealthiest 2% and everybody else breathes a sigh of relief. ther

getting into the meat of the matter right now, the fiscal cliff issue that's taking a lot of the oxygen out of the room in washington, d.c. i understand we have the shot back up. let's go back to the president. no audio right now? can we show the president? he's actually taken to holding a hand mike so hopefully they'll get the audio issue figured out but we have congressman debbie wasserman schultz 1257bing by, the chair of the dnc and was listening like all of us were to the president and hopefully we'll get the audio issue revolved. congresswoman, good to have you with us. >> thanks, thomas. >> just as we were about to hear what the president was saying with regards to what's taking place in washington, d.c., with you and your colleagues we lost the audio. the vitriol is well established on both sides. the president and john boehner have reportedly not even taken time to speak to each other when face-to-face yesterday at a white house christmas event but it seems both sides can agree that the sky is blue on the one issue when keeping tax cuts where they are for the middle class. >> right. >> why can't we get that one

away in washington about the fiscal cliff negotiations shaking his head about what if. what is the future for mitt romney within the republican party, if any? >> well it doesn't appear that there's going to be a whole lot of one by his own choice. my colleague did an exhaustive look at what he's been doing. what he's not doing is involving himself in anyway in the political debate. when john mccain lost or john kerry lost they had day jobs to go back to on the hill so thermometer automatically and instantly involved in the debate pep isn't but not showing any inclinton acceleration to be even though we're in a crisis at this moment, particularly the republican party is crying out for some sort of leadership to have somebody to move people along to a compromise. he conceivably could be that man but he seems to be very much looking intern fiscally. >> it's a small sliver of people alive that can understand exactly what the governor is going through now. but certainly not within the heightened style of election process that we go through now. one romney adviser compared romney with al
